Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1319 but traces origins to 13th century. Formally known as Company of Merchants of the Staple of England and sometimes as Merchant Staplers. Dealt in wool, cloth skins, lead and tin but especially in the former two in which it enjoyed monopolies. Variously located at 'the staple' for the time being, a designated location for its trading which included Antwerp, London and Calais. Declined in 18th century and thereafter developed as a quasi livery company and from 1948 as a social and charitable body when based at York
