Traced origins to 1952 when established by British Film Institute as Experimental Film Fund to provide small grants in support of UK film making in circumstances when a film was thought not to be commercially viable. 1966 revived as BFI Production Board with substantially greater funds. Co-funded with others and sometimes alone new film makers and films which included full length features and documentaries some of which proved to be commercially successful. Closed 2000 when functions transferred to UK Film Council
