His general engineering business was sometime known as Neilson & Mitchell. In early 1840s, under Walter M Neilson, 1819-89, built its first railway locomotive and by early 1850s was focused exclusively on locomotive manufacture. Emerged as a leading locomotive manufacturer and exporter. Known as Neilson & Co by 1874. 1876 the business was controlled by James Reid and became known as Neilson, Reid & Co. In 1903 merged with Dubs & Co and Sharp, Stewart & Co to form the North British Locomotive Co Ltd
