William Bolts, otherwise Willem Boltz, 1738-1808, was an English merchant of Dutch birth. In mid 1750s in Portugal and went out to Calcutta in 1859 in service of the East India Company and worked there as a private merchant in partnership with others - Johnstone, Hay & Bolts - while undertaking his Company duties. Made substantial profits and came into serious conflict with Company who deported him to England. Legal disputes followed and in c1773 he was bankrupt. Subsequently returned to India in the service of the Imperial East India Co of Trieste for which he established factories and who provided protection [2023]
