Traced origins to 1860s when Previte Greig & Finlayson, London merchants and insurance brokers, first acquired an interest in the lease of a major pitch lake, yielding asphalt for road building, in Trinidad. Gradually a lease was acquired on virtually the whole lake and an association was formed with the firm of A L Barber of USA who came to manage the operation. 1888 Trinidad Asphalt Co, owned by Previte and Barber, formed in USA, with Previte selling its output in UK and Europe. Reorganised in 1898 as a UK business known as New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co Ltd. 1949 Barber interest acquired by Previte when Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co Ltd formed in Trinidad which subsequently acquired Previte & Co Ltd. Became a leading supplier in Europe and USA of asphalt for road construction and was active in road construction and maintenance. 1916 merged with Limmer Asphalt Paving Co Ltd to form Limmer & Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co Ltd
