Established in London by John Fownes, 1752-1827, who had earlier business connections at Worcester from 1777 where he had been a fur, leather and glove merchant. By 1781 making gloves in central London. 1795 developed a factory at Hanwell and another at Battersea in 1809. By 1825 known as John Fownes & Sons and as Fownes Brothers & Co in 1827. From 1880s opened large factories at Worcester. Emerged as leading glove makers with manufacturing interests also in USA and Germany. 1972 acquired by Dent [2023]
