Traced origins to 1881 when David Johnstone Smith, b1858, set up as a chartered accountant at Glasgow. 1884 joined Andrew Williamson in partnership as D Johnstone Smith & Williamson, a title that was soon abbreviated to Smith & Williamson. Initially focused on financing businesses, especially Australian banks and New Zealand finance companies, by issuing deposit receipts or terminal debentures. Opened London office in 1893. Enjoyed strong links with Australasian business well into 20th century.
