Notes:

James Burton , 1761-1837, was a builder and speculative property developer and Decimus, 1800-81, his son, was a leading architect. Although closely associated in many schemes they were not business partners. James commenced speculative building in 1785 and was the most successful London speculator of the late 18th/early 19th centuries. Responsible for much residential building in Bloomsbury and Regent's Park, in the latter working closely with John Nash. Developed St Leonards, Sussex, from 1830 into a major resort. Decimus opened his architectural practice in London in 1823 and was quickly involved in the design of prestigious buildings and public open spaces in central London. Especially involved in design of royal parks and adjacent areas. His clients included, notably, the government's Office of Works. Also designed some country houses. Retired 1869 when his practice was continued by his nephew, Henry M Burton
