Invested in Witwatersrand gold mines with great success. 1913 acquired Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Co Ltd from Sir J B Robertson and emerged as a leading South African gold mining business. Subsequently developed platinum and uranium mines and acquired a portfolio of other South African property and industrial interests. Subsequently controlled by Anglo American Corp
