Traced origins to 1811 when established by John Sykes. Developed rapidly under his son, Joseph. Specialised in card clothing in which it developed as a leading business. In 1897 with Whiteleys formed the English Card Clothing Co Ltd which soon after absorbed, inter alia, Samuel Law & Sons Ltd and Wilson & Ingham Ltd. Retained separate identity. Subsequently diversified into related products such as card wire, abrasive materials, etc. Sometime part of Carclo Engineering Group Plc and in 2001 sold to a Belgium business
