A connection of Balfour Williamson & Co, established at San Francisco in 1869 by Robert Balfour and Alexander Guthrie. Also had a presence at Liverpool. Initially handled imports from Britain and Australia and, more importantly, wheat exports. 1876 opened a branch at Portland, Oregon, followed by others. By 1890s involved in wide range of other activities such as mortgage loans and land investment forming specialist subsidiaries. Later had interests in warehousing, grain mills, oil extraction, cement factories, etc
