Traced origins to the corn and seed merchant business of George Strickland, 1780-1859, established at Hastings prior to 1820. Business developed by his son and grandsons who also traded as coal merchants. Established a Hailsham branch and business subsequently carried forward as Stricklands Ltd of Hailsham, which developed several branches, and F Strickland & Son Ltd of Hastings. Early 20th century diversified into other areas such as seed potatoes and animal feed manufacture. 1960 businesses merged as F Stricklands & Sons Ltd. From 1960s disposed of assets and from 1967 operated as a Sussex chain of garden and pet shops. Closed around 2000
