Traced origins in milling to Stephen, c1773-1856, and George, b1764, Cannon who established a grain milling business at South Darenth Watermill in 1806. Stephen's sons each developed their own milling businesses built on mills at Canterbury, Northfleet, Horton Kirby and elsewhere. Of these, Stephen, d1872, was the most successful emerging as a leading Kent miller with large mills at Bexley and Horton Kirby. The business was substantially developed by his son, also Stephen, who had mills at, inter alia, Bexley, Dartford and especially Erith and Lewisham.
