Traces origins to 1936 when established by Jack Bowthorpe, d1978, as Goodliffe Electric Supplies Ltd to design and supply electrical fittings, especially re lighting and cables. Initially located in central London before moving to Croydon in 1938. 1938 renamed Bowthorpe Electric Co Ltd. 1939 started to manufacture. 1948 relocated to Crawley. 1949 restructured as Bowthorpe Holdings Ltd and converted to a public company 1955. From early 1950s grew by acquisition. 1957 acquired electrical fittings business of Paul Hellermann followed by that of Insuloid Manufacturing Co Ltd, Manchester, in 1964. By now focused on manufacture of electrical fittings such as insulation sleeves, cable connectors, sealing devices re cables, cable fixings, etc. By 1982 known as Bowthorpe Plc. From 1980s diversified in terms of products and international markets. By 2000 a leading supplier of electrical and electronic equipment and components to a wide range of high tech industries, especially testing systems for the communication industry. 2000 renamed Spirent Communications Plc.
